Free, ad-supported terminal coding agent built on Mario Zechner's Pi agent harness. Run npx free-pi-cli, sign in with GitHub (device code), and code against a daily free allowance; default model DeepSeek V4 Flash. The makers call it an early experiment. Ads pay for compute, and your sessions may be used to train models.
Caveat: Read before using: free-pi is paid for by terminal ads and by training on your sessions. Its consent terms say prompts, code, files and model responses are saved as traces, used to train models and may be shared or sold to third parties, with no opt-out after you accept (except where the law gives one); a third-party ad provider (Gravity) receives excerpts of your recent conversation to pick ads. Don't use it on secrets or code you aren't allowed to share. The makers call it an early experiment (alpha, no warranty or uptime guarantee). source
How free-pi is free: ads and training on your sessions
Per free-pi's Ads and privacy docs (checked Oct 20, 2026), ads appear in the terminal as framed cards, and the docs say ad content is never added to the prompt or tool results. Some ads come from a third-party provider, Gravity, which receives excerpts of your recent conversation to pick an ad. The consent screen says your coding sessions (prompts, code, files and model responses) are saved as traces, used to train models and may be shared or sold to third parties, with no opt-out after you accept except where the law gives one. free-pi says it tries to strip personal information but cannot promise traces are clean, and tells users not to put secrets, credentials or code they are not allowed to share into a session. It is described as alpha, with no warranty or uptime guarantee.
Free allowance, models and limits
Each account gets a free daily allowance whose size the server sets and can change (the docs deliberately do not state an amount). /usage shows it as a percentage. One active session per account. The homepage (checked Oct 20, 2026) lists 18 models with DeepSeek V4 Flash as the default; others include Claude Haiku 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5 (premium, uses the allowance fast) and Qwen3.5 35B, each with a usage multiplier. When the allowance runs out, requests are rejected until the next day unless you buy credits.
Install and requirements
npx free-pi-cli (version 0.4.7 on npm, Oct 20, 2026). Needs Node.js 22.15+ (or 23.8+ on the Current line); older Node is refused with an upgrade message (we confirmed this on Node 20). Sign-in is a GitHub device-code login; no payment details needed. The CLI updates itself unless FREEPI_NO_AUTO_UPDATE=1. The client is MIT-licensed on GitHub (dennisonbertram/free-pi-cli); inference runs on free-pi's server.
