| Claude Code | OpenAI Codex | |
|---|---|---|
| Our score (terminal / CLI coding agent) | 88/100 (#1 of 6) | 84/100 (#2 of 6) |
| Who it's for | Developers who want a terminal-first agent with Anthropic models (Opus/Sonnet/Haiku/Fable) and are fine paying for Claude Pro or Max. | Developers already on ChatGPT Plus/Pro/Business who want Codex in the CLI, IDE, desktop app and cloud, with GPT-6.x models. |
| How you buy it | Included with Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Not on Free. Usage is shared with Claude chat on the same plan. | Included with ChatGPT Free (limited), Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Also usable with an API key (no cloud features; billed at API rates). |
| Paid pricing (individual) | Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually); Max from $100/mo with 5x or 20x Pro usage. Max 5x includes $100/mo API credits; Max 20x includes $200/mo API credits (claim via Console; not for interactive Claude Code). | Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo; Pro $100, $200 or $500/mo. Ultrafast mode is listed for Pro $500 (and eligible Enterprise/Edu). Business $20/user/mo annual ($25 monthly, 2+ users). |
| Free / entry tier | No Claude Code on Free. Lowest paid entry is Pro at $20/mo ($17 annual). | Free plan includes limited Codex (GPT-6 Luna at standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout). Go $8/mo is the cheapest paid Codex plan. |
| Models (as of check date) | Anthropic models on the Claude plan (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku, Fable per plan rules). Claude Code shares the plan's usage pool with chat. | GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna on Plus and up; Free/Go emphasize GPT-6 Luna. GPT-5.5 retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on Oct 14, 2026 (API-key sessions unaffected). |
| Surfaces | Terminal, IDEs, Claude desktop/web; also listed for Team seats. | Web, CLI, IDE extension, iOS, desktop app; cloud tasks, GitHub/Slack integrations on eligible plans. API-key mode: CLI/SDK/IDE only, no cloud features. |
| Usage meter | Rolling five-hour session window plus weekly limits on paid plans; chat and Claude Code draw from one pool. Exact message counts are not published. | Plus has estimated local messages per five-hour period by model; Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit (weekly limits may apply). Cloud tasks can use more than local messages. Credits extend usage after included limits. |
