Can you use Vercel's free Hobby plan for a commercial app?
Last updated
Short answer: No. Vercel's fair use guidelines restrict Hobby to non-commercial, personal use. Any commercial deployment needs Pro ($20/month, which includes $20 of usage credit) or Enterprise.
What Vercel counts as commercial
Vercel defines commercial usage as any deployment used for the financial gain of anyone involved in making the project, including a paid employee or consultant writing the code. Its listed examples: any way of requesting or processing payment from visitors; advertising the sale of a product or service; being paid to create, update or host the site; a site whose primary purpose is affiliate linking; and showing ads, including Google AdSense. Asking for donations does not count as commercial.
Why this matters for vibe-coded apps
If you built a SaaS, a store, a client site or anything with a Stripe checkout in v0, Bolt, Lovable, Cursor or Claude Code and deployed it on Vercel's free plan, it falls under commercial use as soon as it takes payments or advertises something for sale. Hobby is fine for personal projects, demos and portfolios. Vercel says to contact its support team if you're unsure.
Your options if the app makes money
Upgrade that project's team to Vercel Pro ($20/month per developer seat; viewer seats are free), or host it somewhere else. Entry prices from each vendor's pricing page are in the table below. Check each host's own terms before you launch, because free tiers have their own limits.
