Codex Plus, Claude Pro, Cursor Premium or Google AI Pro: which AI coding subscription is the best value?
Last updated
Short answer: It depends on which models and which kind of tool you want. Claude Pro ($20/mo, $17 annual) includes Claude Code with Opus and Sonnet. ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) includes Codex with GPT-6.1 Sol in the CLI, IDE, web and cloud. Cursor Premium ($30/mo) is the only AI editor of the four, with cloud agents and Bugbot, but its included usage covers Grok and Composer only; Claude, GPT and Gemini bill extra at API price. Google AI Pro ($19.99/mo) is the broadest bundle (Gemini 4 Argon in the Gemini app, higher Antigravity, Jules and Gemini CLI limits, 5 TB storage), though Argon in Antigravity launched for Ultra only. Pick the model you trust most for coding; pick Cursor only if you want the editor.
The four plans at a glance (checked Oct 15, 2026)
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and includes Codex on the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS, with GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, automatic code review and Slack integration. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), and includes Claude Code. Cursor Premium on The X Subscription is $30 a month ($300 a year) with 4x Plus usage, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot, Origin code hosting and third-party models at API list price. Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month and bundles Gemini 4 Argon access in the Gemini app, expanded limits in Antigravity, Jules and AI Studio, $10 a month in Google Cloud credits and 5 TB of storage.
What each $20 actually buys for coding
Codex Plus: OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local messages per five hours with GPT-6.1 Sol (and 350 to 3,000 with the lighter GPT-6 Luna), with weekly limits possible and paid credits after that. Claude Pro: Claude Code shares one pool with Claude chat, reset on a rolling five-hour window plus weekly limits; Anthropic publishes no fixed message count, and Max (from $100) gives 5x or 20x more. Google AI Pro: Gemini CLI allows 1,500 requests per user per day with an AI Pro login (vs 1,000 free), and Antigravity and Jules get expanded limits. None of these is unlimited, and none publishes an exact coding-hours figure.
Why Cursor Premium costs $30 and what's not included
Premium is part of The X Subscription, which also bundles Grok and X features. Its weekly pool covers Cursor's own models: Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5. Claude, GPT and Gemini aren't in the pool; on Premium they're charged from prepaid credit at API list price from the first request (Cursor's docs list Claude Opus 5.5 at $4/$20 and Gemini 4 Argon at $2/$10 per million input/output tokens). So Premium plus regular Claude use costs more than $30. The $8 Plus plan is Grok and Composer only, with no cloud agents or third-party models.
The Gemini 4 Argon catch
Google released Gemini 4 Argon on Oct 13, 2026. Google AI Pro subscribers get it in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, but Google's launch post put Argon in Antigravity, its agentic IDE, for AI Ultra subscribers only. Elsewhere, GitHub Copilot offers Argon on Pro+ ($39) and up, not the $10 Pro plan, and Cursor lists it as a third-party model at API price. If Argon in a coding agent is the reason you'd buy, check the current plan pages first.
How to choose
Want Claude Opus or Sonnet in an agent: Claude Pro. Want OpenAI's models with cloud tasks and GitHub PR review: ChatGPT Plus for Codex. Want an AI editor with completions, cloud agents and code review in one app: Cursor Premium, knowing Claude and GPT cost extra. Already pay for Google storage or want the widest bundle and a free-tier-friendly CLI: Google AI Pro. Two cheap combos people use: Claude Pro plus Cursor Plus ($28) or ChatGPT Plus plus Claude Pro ($40). These are editorial notes from vendor pages, not a scored head-to-head.

FAQ
Is Codex Plus a real plan?
Not as a separate product. "Codex Plus" usually means ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo), which includes Codex. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists Codex under Free, Go ($8), Plus ($20), Pro ($100, $200 or $500) and Business.
Why is Cursor Premium $30 when the others are $20?
Premium is a tier of The X Subscription, which bundles Cursor with Grok and X features (Cloud Agents, Bugbot, Grok Bot, the X checkmark). Its included usage covers Grok and Composer; third-party models like Claude cost extra. Cursor's old $20 Pro plan is closed to new customers.
Does Google AI Pro include Gemini 4 Argon?
In the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, yes, per Google's launch post (Oct 13, 2026). In Google Antigravity, Argon launched for AI Ultra subscribers. Check Google's plan page for changes.
Which $20 plan has the most coding usage?
Vendors don't publish comparable numbers. OpenAI gives message-range estimates for Codex, Gemini CLI gives a daily request quota, and Anthropic and Cursor describe usage as multiples of a base plan. Usage depends heavily on the model and task.
